Anki is the most powerful flashcard app there is, and its spaced repetition is the reason many people swear by it. It is also a toolkit: you find or build decks, set up card templates, add pictures and audio, and read charts to see how you're doing. Braintain uses the same SM-2 scheduling but does that setup for you. Here is how they compare, including where Anki is the better choice.

The same memory science
Both apps are built on active recall and spaced repetition. You see a card, try to remember the answer, flip it and rate how it went. Both use the SM-2 algorithm to turn that rating into the next review date, so easy cards come back in weeks and hard ones tomorrow. Anki also offers FSRS, a newer scheduler you can switch on in its deck options, and lets you tune every interval. Braintain keeps SM-2 and doesn't ask you to configure anything.
The difference is the setup
In Anki, the quality of your cards is up to you. A good deck takes hours to build, and shared decks range from excellent to a bare list of words. Pictures and audio make cards much easier to remember, but adding them means finding files or setting up templates.
In Braintain, you can open a BrainPod and start in seconds. Every BrainPod card comes with:
- A picture made for that card, so the word has a visual anchor.
- An example sentence that shows how it's really used.
- Audio for the word and its example.
- Believable wrong answers, so quiz mode tests whether you know the word, not just whether it looks familiar.
You can still write your own cards, and they get the same audio and scheduling.
Charts or a coach
Anki shows you detailed statistics: reviews per day, retention, interval distributions. If you like reading charts, they're excellent. Braintain's Premium plan adds Mira, an AI coach that reads your review history and tells you what it means: a Learning Score, your strengths and weak spots, and what to study today.
